Overview
To study at a US college or university, you usually must have
- Abitur or Fachhochschulreife for an undergraduate program
- Vordiplom or six Fachsemesters for a master's or doctoral program
- Diplom for a doctoral program
To apply to a U.S. college or university, you must
- research schools and programs and contact admissions offices for application materials (start at least 18 months before you plan to attend)
- take required tests (TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT, or LSAT) (these can be taken only at specific times each year; start at least a year ahead of time)
- submit applications (forms, essays, transcripts, and letters of recommendation) (deadlines are usually between November and January)
- acquire financial aid or prove your means of financing your study
- attain the appropriate visa (once you have been admitted)
- N.B.: if you apply through an organization like Fulbright, there are shortcuts to this process!
